Deepfakes, according to IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, are a new threat to democracy, and the government will soon be enacting new laws to combat them.Following a discussion with social media platforms regarding the deepfake issue, Vaishnaw stated that businesses have reached a consensus regarding the necessity of specific, practical tasks in areas like user awareness raising, prevention, detection, and enhancing reporting mechanisms. The IT Minister said,“We will start drafting the regulation today itself, and within a short time we will have a new set of regulations for deepfakes … this could be in the form of amending existing framework or bringing new rules, or new law”.IT Minister Vaishnaw even said,“We will have our next meeting in the first week of December…that will be on follow-up action on todays decisions, and also on what should be included in the draft regulation”.Artificial intelligence is used in the creation of synthetic or doctored material, or deepfakes, which are digitally altered and manipulated to effectively misrepresent or mimic someone.
