Mobile World Congress (MWC) is currently underway in Barcelona, and this year the event is more focused on smartphone technology and 5G and its uses. Here, the chip maker company’s Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon has declared that their company has no plans to provide modems for Apple in 2024. However, he added that the decision is up to the tech giant. Reportedly, Apple is planning to launch its own 5G modem chips for iPhone in 2024, moving away from Qualcomm, which currently provides the modems to the company.

The CEO of Qualcomm, Cristiano Amon has stated that Qualcomm has no plans for providing modems for Apple iPhone in coming year, but he added that the decision is up to the tech giant. Amon also noted that Qualcomm informed their investors in year 2021 itself that it did not expect to provide modems for iPhone in 2023, but Apple decided to continue the same for another year. In 2019, Apple bought Intel’s modem business for around 1 billion-dollar, and it is predicted that it will start using its own components.

Amon added that Qualcomm has been expanding its business into automotive semiconductors and low-power applications. The business is now engaged in a dispute with British semiconductor company Arm, who accused Qualcomm of violating US law. In an effort to grow its PC business, Qualcomm recently purchased Nuvia, a firm that makes server chips based on the Arm architecture.

Amon indicated that Qualcomm has permits to sell 4G chips to Huawei and that the business is in compliance with its licence in response to reports that the US government is considering cancelling export licences for US suppliers to Huawei. Qualcomm would suffer financially from a licence revocation, but Amon emphasised that the business is more diversified and expanding in the automotive and internet of things industries.

Meanwhile, Qualcomm has announced that its Snapdragon satellite technology is coming to most Android smartphones. He also said that Snapdragon satellite technology will be used in Honor, Motorola, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi upcoming smartphones.

Qualcomm to set Apple Silicon

Qualcomm has been working on the next-generation ARM-based chip to rival Apple’s M-series chips. But it may take some time while before Qualcomm has its Apple Silicon rival out there in the market. After the deadline missed in year 2022, it seems that Apple Silicon vies may take time to hit the market. When the CEO asked about Qualcomm’s ARM chip, he said that “We design, you know, we have not yet announced, but our SoC and custom CPUs, you should think of Apple’s competing for Microsoft’s ecosystem.”

Two years after Qualcomm first expressed interest in acquiring Apple Silicon in November 2021, Apple has two generations of its bespoke silicon on the market but Qualcomm has yet to make a move.

One of the next ARM processors from Qualcomm, code-named “Hamosa,” is rumoured to have an architecture similar to that of Apple’s M1 chip. It will have 12 cores, of which 8 will be performance cores and the remaining cores will be efficient cores.

Technology used in Apple’s iPhone

Apple‘s iPhone combines a computer, iPod, digital camera and cellular phone into one device with a touchscreen interface. The iPhone runs the iOS operating system, and in 2021 when the iPhone 13 was introduced, it offered up to 1TB of storage and a 12-megapixel camera.

The iPhones have a series of processors that reportedly deliver better performance as compared to the most of Android phones. In addition, Apple’s iPhone makes its mobile devices more efficient and effective by blending their hardware and software well.
