The Indian government is set to roll out a tracking system for lost or stolen mobile phones across the country. A pilot project for the CEIR system has been carried out by the Centre for Department of Telematics (CDoT) in several telecom circles, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and the North East area.

Reportedly, the CEIR system is set to launch on May 17 across pan-India. Rajkumar Upadhyay, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Project Board of CDoT acknowledged that the technology is prepared for pan-India deployment but did not provide a specific date. The system is prepared, and this quarter it will be installed throughout India. People would be able to disable and locate their stolen mobile phones through this.

The concerned government department has been directed to keep a check on the use of clone mobile phones across all the telecom operators.

After this system, the telecom operators will be able to check any unauthorised devices on their network. This is because the Centre has made it mandatory to disclose IMEI- 15-digit-unique numeric identifiers of the mobile phones before they are sold.

What is CEIR?

The purpose of CEIR is to make it simpler for people to report stolen and lost mobile phones and to prevent those devices from being used nationwide. Additionally, citizens can verify the status of their request to prohibit a stolen or misplaced phone and, after the device has been located, unlock it.

How will CEIR work?

Recently, the CEIR system has been the subject of a pilot programme run by CDoT, an independent telecom research and development (R&D) institution of the DoT, Government of India, in telecom hubs including Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and the North-East. To monitor the usage of cloned mobile phones, CDoT introduced elements to the system, doing so for all telecom carriers.
