As per sources, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is implementing new regulations aimed at combating unwanted calls and messages. From May 1, 2023, consumers are likely to get some relief from unwanted calls and messages from unknown numbers, as per the new guidelines. The new rules will require all telecom companies to use Artificial-Intelligence spam filters in their calls and messages.

The move has been taken by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to combat customer fraud and harassment. According to the sources, the new rules will mandate Indian telecom companies, which includes Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea and BSNL, to utilise AI spam filters in their calls and messages. This AI feature is designed in such a way that it will identify and block fake and promotional calls and messages from countless numbers.

The major market players, Bharti Airtel and Jio have agreed to the mandate and will launch the service soon. It is also anticipated that telecom operators are hesitating to adopt the technology due to privacy and security concerns. The TRAI has ordered telecom firms to stop making promotional calls to 10-digit mobile numbers, which are frequently used by spammers and scammers, to further combat the issue of bogus calls and texts. The government has also asked carriers to include a Call ID function that allows customers to recognise callers by seeing their name and photo on their mobile phone’s screen.

Notably, the implementation of the AI technology to combat spam is scheduled to start on May 1, 2023. The main objective of the service is to tackle the rise in the number of spam calls and messages that cause inconvenience to customers.

How to use the DND service?

Meanwhile, the companies start with the AI tool, you can activate Do Not Disturb (DND) on your mobile number to permanently ban spam calls.

A unique service provided by TRAI permanently stops spam calls. The National Customer Preference Register (NCPR), helps you prevent spam calls.

The National Consumer Preference Register makes sure that DND activation only blocks unwanted commercial calls from third parties and does not block SMS notifications from your bank, calls from online portals and services or calls from other people on your line.
