Meta Platform’s Threads, positioned as a rival to X, has launched its web version globally, company sources said on Thursday.

The move to the web is aimed at attracting professionals and media users who frequently post from their computers during work hours, a demographic that is highly active on social media.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram and Threads, announced the web version’s launch, writing, “Threads.net is now live for everyone. Let us know what you think.”

Previously, Threads was only accessible as a mobile app on iOS and Android devices. However, the web version is expected to make the platform more appealing to a wider audience.

Threads working hard to add more functionality to web version, says Meta

A Threads spokesperson confirmed that the team is actively working on enhancing the web experience. “The Threads team is working hard to bring this experience to parity with mobile, and will be adding more functionality to the web experience in the coming weeks,” the spokesperson said.

Threads was hurriedly introduced by Meta in early July, targeting Instagram’s user base of over a billion people. The initial response was impressive, with Threads becoming the fastest-downloaded app ever, surpassing the record set by OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

However, the initial enthusiasm waned over time, leading to declining usage by early adopters. Users began to express the need for a web version and other improvements to enhance the app’s appeal.

Celebrities who were granted early access to Threads, such as Jennifer Lopez and American Football star Tom Brady, have only sporadically engaged with the platform. Usage data from web analytics website Similarweb indicates a decline in daily active users on the Android version of Threads, dropping from a peak of 49.3 million to 10.3 million.

Despite its challenges, social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk, remains a dominant choice for commentary and news.

During the launch of Threads last month, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged the app’s need for stabilisation and emphasised the company’s commitment to nurturing its growth.

It’s important to note that Threads is currently unavailable in Europe due to uncertainties regarding compliance with the European Union’s data privacy regulations, an issue that parent company Meta is actively addressing.
