In a surprising move, Meta has put restrictions on its AI chatbot's ability to answer questions regarding the ongoing general elections in India. This development has raised eyebrows as users are unable to obtain information about politicians and political parties through platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger, where Meta AI is integrated.

Introduction of Meta AI

Meta recently introduced its advanced AI, known as Meta AI, in India. This AI is designed to perform various tasks such as answering questions sourced from the web, creating images, and even composing messages and essays. However, it seems that Meta AI is deliberately avoiding answering queries related to the elections to prevent the dissemination of potentially misleading information.

Refusal to answer Election-related queries

According to the reports from Gadgets 360, when users ask Meta AI about anything related to the ongoing general elections in India, including basic information about politicians or political parties, the AI refuses to provide a direct response. Instead, it consistently redirects users to the Election Commission of India (ECI) website, with a standard message stating, "This question may pertain to a political figure during general elections, please refer to the link https://elections24.eci.gov.in."

Implications of Meta AI's decision

This decision by Meta AI to refrain from engaging with election-related queries highlights the company's cautious approach to preventing the spread of misinformation. By directing users to the official ECI website, Meta aims to ensure that users access accurate and reliable information directly from the authorized source.

New language models

Notably, Meta recently unveiled two new large language models (LLMs) as part of its next-generation Llama 3. These models have been integrated with Meta AI, indicating the company's ongoing efforts to enhance the capabilities of its AI-driven platforms.

As the general elections in India progress, Meta's approach to handling political inquiries may influence how other tech companies navigate similar situations in the future.
