The newly launched JioBharat phone will disrupt the Indian telecom market much more than the original JioPhone, according to Emkay Global Financial Services.

Emkay Global released a report that noted that these new phones – targeted at the 2G users in the country – are a more focused product, have a simpler value proposition, and have better distribution, and production planning.

“We believe JioBharat can again transition over 100 mn subscribers if there are no supply chain or product-performance hiccups,” the Emkay report stated.

The new phones will help Jio grab a large market share – as high as 40% – in the country, according to Emkay.

“There is an addressable market of over 250 mn users, where the device was a key challenge. With Jio’s network and distribution strength along with the JioBharat device, Jio would be able to capture over 40 per cent market share,” the report read.

Emkay further added that if the 2G internet users – the target of the new JioBharat phones – migrate to Jio, then Airtel and Vi will suffer.

“Assuming 40% of 2G users shift to JioBharat, the impact on India’s mobile revenue for Vi/Airtel can be 11%/8% and the impact on EBITDA can be 19%/11%,” Emkay said in the report.

JioBharat will target 2G users in India

Reliance Jio launched the new low-cost phones on Monday. The new JioBharat phone – priced at ₹999 – will have features such as 4G internet and unlimited talk time. Users will also be able to access the applications under the Jio umbrella such as JioPay, JioCinema, JioSaavn, and more.

The telecom giants said that these new phones will help those still using 2G internet to migrate to newer technology at an affordable price.

There are still 250 million mobile phone users in India who remain ‘trapped’ in the 2G era, unable to tap into basic features of the internet at a time when the world stands at the cusp of a 5G revolution. 6 years ago when Jio was launched, we made it clear that Jio will leave no stone unturned to democratize internet and pass the benefits of technology to every Indian,” Akash Ambani, Charman, Jio said in a company statement.

“Technology will no longer remain a privilege for a select few. The new Jio Bharat phone is another step in that direction,” he added.
