With the rise in technology, modern life has become a boon for common people. In addition to the positive aspects of technology, there are some negative aspects as well. One of the main concerns is the presence of hidden or spy cameras in the room. Although it is utmost important in many safety scenarios.

Hidden cameras in hotel rooms have caused a lot of concern, as they can capture the private moments of guests and can cause a great deal of distress. Although, the answer to this problem is quite easy. You will be surprised to know how. You can quickly and easily detect the hidden camera in the hotel room by using the camera of your smartphone.

In order to record videos in the dark, covert cameras employ infrared (IR) blasters. These rays cannot be seen with the naked human eyes but these can be detected by cameras as they are equipped to detect infrared rays. As a result, they can detect hidden cameras anywhere.

Here’s how you can use your smartphone to locate a hidden camera.

Your smartphone can see, what you can’t. Follow these simple steps to do so:

1. Turn off all the lights in the room. Ensure all the gadgets like TV, smartphone, laptops are off. Also draw the curtains to allow complete darkness.

2. Now, turn on your smartphone’s camera and point it in a direction that you are suspicious of, such as vases, wall clocks, paintings, door locks etc.

3. Watch carefully, if some light (It will probably look sort of purplish-pink, although we have seen it reported as purplish-blue) is flickering on your smartphone’s screen. It will detect infrared light as they are detected by the camera lens as tiny flashes of light.

4. If you notice any kind of light flare on your smartphone, carefully inspect that covered area to expose the hidden camera.

If you are wondering why you are not able to find the hidden camera then (either because there is no camera or the camera isn’t equipped with IR), then another possible way to find an active device is to check what else is connected to the local network.

There are a number of network analysis applications out there that can find what devices are connected to your local network. Of course, there are many other possible methods for you to try.

By following these simple steps, you can easily be on the safe side when you stay somewhere.

Also, there are some paid detection tools in the market. And, if you’re seriously concerned, you can go out and purchase a radio frequency (RF) detector, which should pick up any signals coming from hidden microphones or cameras.

Camera in your hotel room, a punishable offence

Installing camera in hotel room is a punishable offence. If you find that the hidden cameras are indeed there, you can file a complaint against the owner of the hotel and take legal action against him if you find it to be true. While travelling anywhere, it is better to be aware and alert.
