OpenAI Interim Chief Executive Officer Mira Murati after taking the leadership role on Friday said that she is "honoured and humbled" to take on the company's leadership role after Sam Altman’s exit. Altman was the co-founder of OpenAI and initially served the company with Elon Musk.
According to the sources, Murati, in a memo has asked staff members to concentrate on their work while they were still in shock by Altman's abrupt resignation, which came as a shock to many in the AI community. "It's more important than ever that we stay focused, driven, and true to our core values," she stated.
Following the announcement, there was much conjecture that his departure might have been influenced by Microsoft Corp., the largest software company in the world and major sponsor of OpenAI.
According to an official blog on OpenAI, “Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.”
OpenAI, while making an official announcement mentioned, “A member of OpenAI’s leadership team for five years, Mira has played a critical role in OpenAI’s evolution into a global AI leader. She brings a unique skill set, understanding of the company’s values, operations, and business, and already leads the company’s research, product, and safety functions. Given her long tenure and close engagement with all aspects of the company, including her experience in AI governance and policy, the board believes she is uniquely qualified for the role and anticipates a seamless transition while it conducts a formal search for a permanent CEO.”
