Apple is set to launch its 'Make in India' iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models shortly after their global debut this fall. The high-end models, assembled locally in India, are expected to hit the market within 1-2 months of the international release. This initiative is part of Apple's partnership with Foxconn’s facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. In a move similar to last year’s strategy with the iPhone 15, the iPhone 16 will be available in India on the same day as its global sales debut. The iPhone 16 Plus models will follow shortly thereafter.

Apple achieved record export figures for India in the April-June quarter, reaching approximately USD 3.8 billion. This success is largely attributed to the government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which has bolstered Apple's manufacturing and export capabilities. The company anticipates a 20 percent increase in iPhone shipments in India this year, driven by robust domestic manufacturing and an effective distribution network.

Support for India’s NavIC

As part of its ongoing commitment to the Indian market, Apple plans to integrate support for India’s indigenous GPS system, NavIC, into its devices. This move underscores Apple's strategic focus on aligning with local technological advancements and regulatory requirements.

Significant market growth

In the last fiscal year (FY24), Apple reported sales of approximately USD 8 billion in India, marking a nearly 33 percent increase year-on-year. This growth is attributed to enhanced brand visibility, increased local manufacturing, and a stronger retail presence.

Strategic diversification amidst global tensions

Industry experts highlight that, amid rising tensions between the US and China, India offers Apple a critical opportunity to diversify its manufacturing and revenue streams. The shift to increased local production and a focus on the Indian market not only supports Apple's growth but also mitigates risks associated with geopolitical uncertainties.

In the first quarter of this year, Apple's success in the Indian market was evident, as the company recorded a 19 percent year-on-year increase in smartphone shipments, contributing to the overall 34 million smartphones shipped in the Indian market.
