After the wave of blue ticks among the social media platforms, Instagram’s rumoured text-based Twitter is reported to come soon. If reports are to be believed, the first glimpse of Instagram’s text-based Twitter competitor surfaced in a leaked marketing clip.
According to the information, the company does not give a separate name to the new app, it just calls it – Instagram’s new text-based app for conversations. The codename P92 is been given to the app, so far.
Users will be able to use the new app with the same username and password, that they use for their Instagram account. The platform also says that followers, handles, bio, and verification will transfer over from the main app. With the help of the new system, the user will be able to make text posts up to 500 characters long with attached links, photos, and videos, which is significantly higher than what free Twitter offers to its users, which is 280 characters.
At the initial stage, it seems that app will mix Instagram and Twitter, based on information from sources.
According to reports, if the app is widely available, it may increase Instagram’s already high level of popularity. Many people are seeking for an alternative platform to communicate information that is similar to tweets as Twitter continues to deteriorate. A text-based Instagram app would provide users who have already established followings on the site an option to just keep posting there rather than having to hunt for followers in yet another location, even though services like Mastodon and Bluesky have garnered some momentum.
However, Meta has declined to comment on this.
According to the sources, the new app could make its debut in June, this year. This will allow the users to use the same credentials that they use for their Instagram accounts. Instagram can leverage its 2.35 billion active users to grow the new platform. If this leaked information holds, it would mean that getting started with the platform should be easy as pie for existing Instagram users.
