Apple has unveiled a major update to its iPhone repair services, making it simpler and more affordable for users to fix their devices. With the introduction of support for used genuine parts, the tech giant aims to revolutionize the repair experience for iPhone owners.

Empowering users with self-service repair

In a bid to democratize the repair process, Apple introduced its Self-Service Repair program a few years ago. This initiative allowed iPhone users to perform repairs on their devices using genuine Apple parts and repair kits, eliminating the need for costly visits to Apple repair centers. However, until now, the program was limited to new parts only.

Expansion to use genuine parts

Now, Apple has expanded its repair program to include support for used genuine parts, a move aimed at reducing repair costs for users. This expansion will enable users to repair their iPhones using pre-owned genuine parts, potentially lowering the overall repair expenses.

Ensuring privacy and security by pairing

To ensure user privacy, security, and device safety, Apple has implemented a process called 'Pairing' for used parts installation. This process verifies the authenticity of the installed part and collects relevant information to safeguard user data and device integrity.

Streamlined repair process

As part of this update, users will no longer need to provide their iPhone's serial number when ordering parts from Apple's Self-Repair Service store, except for repairs related to the logic board.

John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, stating, "For the last two years, teams across Apple have been innovating on product design and manufacturing to support repairs with used Apple parts that won't compromise users' safety, security, or privacy."

Activation Lock feature

The expanded repair program, including select iPhones, is set to launch this Fall. Additionally, Apple is extending its Activation Lock feature to iPhone parts, aiming to deter theft and unauthorized part disassembly.

Apple's latest repair initiative underscores its commitment to customer choice, convenience, and product longevity while ensuring stringent privacy and security measures.
