The Centre has recently implemented a new numbering series, 160xxxxxxx, specifically designed for service or transactional calls. This move aims to assist Indian citizens in easily distinguishing legitimate calls from unsolicited voice calls often made by telemarketers using 10-digit mobile numbers.

Previously, the 140xxxxxxx series was designated for telemarketers for promotional, service, or transactional voice calls. However, due to extensive use by telemarketers for promotional purposes, consumers frequently ignored such calls, resulting in missed important service or transactional calls.

Challenges Faced

The widespread use of regular 10-digit numbers by genuine entities for service or transactional calls, alongside fraudulent activities by fraudsters using 10-digit numbers, prompted the need for a clear differentiation between various call types.

Introduction to New Numbering Series

To address these challenges, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) allocated the new numbering series, 160xxxxxxx, exclusively for service or transactional voice calls by principal entities. This initiative aims to streamline communication channels and enhance consumer experience.

Benefits and Implementation

The distinct numbering series will enable citizens to manage their communication effectively by easily identifying service or transactional calls. For instance, service or transactional calls originating from Financial Entities such as RBI, SEBI, PFRDA, IRDA, etc. will begin with 1601.

Telecom Service Providers (TSP) are mandated to ensure thorough verification of every entity before assigning a number from the 160 series. Moreover, entities are required to commit to using these numbers solely for service or transactional calls, ensuring authenticity and reliability in communication channels.

This strategic differentiation is expected to mitigate confusion, enhance communication efficiency, and reduce the impact of unsolicited calls on consumers' daily lives.
