Google has introduced significant privacy updates to its Maps app, particularly concerning the handling of users' location data. Previously, the location history was stored on Google’s servers, but this is set to change. Google announced that location history will now be saved directly on users' devices instead of the cloud. This new approach ensures that all places users visit, such as landmarks and restaurants, will remain under their control, enhancing data security and privacy.

Benefits of Local Storage in Google Maps

By saving location history locally on iOS and Android devices, users will no longer need to rely on cloud servers, bringing several advantages:

  • Increased Privacy: Users will have complete control over their location data.
  • Enhanced Security: Data stored on devices is less vulnerable to breaches compared to cloud storage.

End-to-End Encrypted Cloud Backups

For those concerned about losing their data, Google will provide end-to-end encrypted cloud backups for the Timeline in Maps. This feature will allow only the user to access their backup, adding an extra layer of security.

Changes to Web Access

One significant change that users might not appreciate is the discontinuation of the web version of Timeline. Previously, users could access their location history via a web interface, but this will no longer be possible. The feature will remain functional only on Google Maps for Android and iOS devices.

Notifications and Action

According to a report by 9to5Google, Google will notify users through an email once the new privacy features are rolled out. The emails will contain instructions on how to update settings to preserve Timeline data. Google has warned that failure to update settings by the specified deadline may result in the loss of some or all Timeline data, including routes and visits.
