Ahead of International Day for people with disabilities, the tech giant company, Apple released a short film titled 'The Lost Voice'. The story narrates a heartwarming story of a little girl and a mythical creature who went on an adventure journey through a forest and lost his voice.

The movie is directed by the famous director Taika Waititi, who directed Jojo Rabbit and Thor: Love and Thunder. The movie highlights two features that were inducted earlier this year in iOS 17. The features include - personal voice and live speech.

What is Personal Voice feature?

Personal voice is a feature that allows users to sample and reproduce their own speech using safe on-device machine learning. This means that even if they ever lose the ability to talk, they may still communicate through their iPhone, iPad, or Mac and sound like themselves. It also uses a live speech feature.

What is live speech feature?

The live speech feature allows its users to communicate by typing words spoken in person on Phone and FaceTime calls, and in assistive communication apps using any of voices, including your Personal Voice.

Apple's short film narrates the struggles of speech disability

The movie was released on November 30, which came ahead of International Day for people with disabilities (December 30), a UN initiative to promote the well-being of people with disability in different dimensions of society.

The film is narrated by a New Zealand native, Tristram Ingham, who is suffering from facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). This can cause progressive muscle degeneration in the face, arms, and shoulders and if not treated well this can ultimately lead to the inability to speak, feed oneself, or in some cases, blink the eyes.
