Google has launched a new auto-archiving feature that will automatically remove more than 60 percent of unused data from the android phones of the user. This feature will help in saving storage space on the device. It is been anticipated that it will decrease the rate of uninstalling the apps, and will still allow the user to quickly download the app whenever required.

According to the experts, this will not remove any user data and will make its presence in a cloud icon on the mobile phone. With the help of this feature, the android user will see a prompt on their mobile to use the auto-archive feature when their device is running out of storage while they try to install any new app. People can also choose to activate the feature which will allow auto-archives for their unused apps while also removing things like permissions and temporary files and disabling notifications. Notably, Google has already started the ability to revoke permissions from unused apps with Android 11.

As per the official statement, if the Android phone of the user will run out of memory, it will receive the prompt while installing any new app on the phone. “Your device is out of storage, and you won’t be able to install this app. With app archiving turned on, your device will detect when you don’t have enough storage and automatically archive apps that you don’t use often. Your data will be saved in case you download the app again,” the prompt reads.

As per experts on this topic, “Auto-archive is only available for developers using the App Bundle to publish their apps. If your app supports archiving, users will be less likely to see it surface amongst uninstall suggestions.” However, if the user wants to re-use the app, he/ she will have to reinstall the app again and resume activity, provided the app is still available on the play store.

The user might have to manually check the list of unused apps and remove them manually from their phone. However, if we talk about the archive feature, uninstallation will lead to the loss of app and user data.

According to Google’s release, the feature will only be accessible for apps when developers publish their apps using the App Bundle, a format that has been mandated for new apps since August 2021. Developers will also be benefitted because it will be less probable for customers to discover their apps in uninstall suggestions when a device wants to clear up storage. In March 2022, the search engine giant unveiled a brand-new software package type called Archived APKs as the first auto-archiving preview.

Other new features of Google

After this feature, Android devices will become more competitive with iOS, which for years has made suggestions about apps to unload. On the other side, Apple launched its iOS 11 in 2017 with personalised recommendations to get rid of unused apps.

For deleting the apps, the user can go to Apps in the Settings menu, and can manually check the unwanted app. Usually, the system tells the information that for how long the app is not been used, the system displays the apps in bracket information ‘last opened more than three months ago’ or ‘last opened 6 months ago’. Some apps can also be manually deleted to free up storage space.

Google also gives access to many other features, which includes Google Keep Single note widgets, with the help of this feature user will be able to manage their to-do list from the home screen. Apart from this, if someone wants to show up to the meeting at its best, one can activate the noise-cancellation in Google Meet during the calls.

Finally, two new sound and display modes will be added to Wear OS 3+ to increase watch accessibility. Split-audio disorientation can be lessened with mono-audio, and you have more options for your watch display with colour correction and grayscale modes.
