Google is reportedly expanding the capabilities of its Circle to Search feature, initially launched with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series. The new update integrates a feature allowing artificial intelligence-driven visual lookup to scan QR codes and barcodes visible on the screen. This enhancement presents users with a chip displaying part of the destination URL and a link preview upon detection of a code.

According to reports, the latest Google app version (v15.25.32) now supports barcode and QR code scanning. Users can activate this function by long-pressing the Home button, triggering the automatic scanning of the screen for visible codes. This functionality was first observed in the Google app v15.19.45.29.arm64 beta, and has now been fully functional following the recent update.

The origins of this feature appear linked to Google Lens, a tool known for its ability to scan QR codes and barcodes. Earlier this year, Erin Lynch, Product Manager, and Alistair Pott, Director of Product Management involved in Circle to Search development, acknowledged in an interview that certain features leveraged Google Lens capabilities. They hinted at ongoing efforts to integrate these products more closely, suggesting that this latest enhancement may be a direct outcome of those initiatives.

Once implemented, this visual lookup capability promises to streamline QR code searches, enhancing user convenience while bolstering security by providing a preview of the destination before users proceed with scanning.

In parallel developments, Google has introduced several new features in its Chrome browser for Android and iOS devices aimed at optimising the search experience. These updates include new shortcuts for local search results and a redesigned address bar to facilitate easier navigation. Additionally, the introduction of 'Chrome Actions' seeks to expedite interactions with local businesses, reflecting Google's ongoing commitment to enhancing user interaction and efficiency across its platform.
