Google has recognized a technical fault that resulted in the unintentional removal of Maps Timeline data from some users in early this month. The corporation has emailed concerned individuals, explaining how to reclaim their deleted information, if at all they had backups activated. According to Android Authority, quoting a Reddit user named sweepernosweeping, Google confirmed in an email that a "technical issue resulted in the deletion of Timeline data for some users." The user further reported losing two weeks' worth of their Timeline data.
The Maps Timeline feature, which records users' location history, had a bug that resulted in data loss for some accounts. Google recently moved Timeline storage to on-device or encrypted cloud backups, favoring user privacy. But some users reported missing data, such as years of travel history.
Sadly, users who did not activate backups will not be able to restore their lost data. Google suggests turning on Timeline backups to avoid future problems. Although some users were able to restore their data, others experienced incomplete backups or no backups.
