The social media platform X will soon incorporate features for audio and video calls, owner and CTO Elon Musk announced on Thursday.

These new communication options are set to be compatible with Android, iOS, PC, and Mac. Further, these calls can be initiated without the need for a phone number, as Musk pointed out.

What did Elon Musk say about X’s upcoming video, audio calls feature?

In a tweet, Musk wrote, “Video & audio calls coming to X: – Works on iOS, Android, Mac & PC – No phone number needed – X is the effective global address book …That set of factors is unique.”

Although the tech entrepreneur has not disclosed a specific launch date for these features, hints of their arrival emerged back in July through a series of screenshots posted by the company’s designer, Andrew Conway. The images showcased the audio and video call options neatly integrated in the top left corner of the Direct Message screen.

Why is X introducing video, audio calls feature?

The inclusion of audio and video calls aligns with Musk’s broader vision of transforming X into an ‘everything app’ that fulfils diverse communication needs, much like China’s WeChat.

Earlier this month, Musk shared his perspective on the current state of social networks, saying, “The sad truth is that there are no great ‘social networks’ right now. We may fail, as so many have predicted, but we will try our best to make there be at least one.”

Previously, on August 25, X announced the upcoming audio and video enhancements, including the ability for X Premium subscribers to upload extended videos up to 2 hours in length, improved mobile live broadcasting quality, an immersive video player for Android and iOS, and the ability to speak and co-host a Space on the web with support for millions of participants.
