Apple to support RCS: In a groundbreaking development, Apple has announced its plans to introduce RCS (Rich Communication Services) support for iPhones, set to roll out in late 2024.

This move marks a departure from traditional SMS and MMS, propelling iPhones into a new era of seamless communication.

What is RCS? The Messaging Evolution

RCS, or Rich Communication Services, represents the next frontier in messaging protocols. Set to potentially replace SMS, RCS enhances traditional text messaging with features commonly found in advanced messaging platforms like iMessage. Notably, RCS serves as a universal standard, fostering interoperability between iOS and Android devices.

iPhones to embrace RCS in 2024

Apple has confirmed to 9to5Mac that, "Late next year, we will add support for the RCS Universal Profile, currently a standard published by the GSM Association. We believe the RCS Universal Profile will be more efficient than SMS or MMS." The emphasis is on providing enhanced interoperability in the U.S. while preserving iMessage as the premier messaging experience for Apple users.

Despite the integration of RCS, Apple underscores the security and superiority of iMessage, reaffirming its position as the primary mode of messaging between iPhones.

Benefits of RCS Integration on iPhones

With RCS support, iPhone users will bid farewell to outdated SMS and MMS protocols. They can now leverage RCS to send texts and high-quality media seamlessly to their Android contacts. Additional perks include read receipts, typing indicators, and more for messaging between iPhones and Android devices.

However, the familiar blue and green bubble distinction between iOS and Android users will persist. Even with RCS, messages from Android phones will appear in green bubbles on iOS, while iMessage exchanges will maintain their distinctive blue appearance.

The EU Influence: Apple's Shift Towards RCS

The move towards RCS is not just a technological leap; it's a response to regulatory dynamics, particularly the EU's upcoming Digital Markets Act. Faced with potential fines of up to 10% of the company's total worldwide annual turnover, Apple is adapting its messaging solutions. RCS on iPhones becomes a strategic move, aligning with the EU's push for increased interoperability and a more open app ecosystem.

As Apple opens the gate to RCS support, it appears the EU is gently nudging the tech giant towards a more inclusive digital landscape, step by step.
