Citing shift in business priorities and an expanded focus on generative artificial intelligence, Amazon on Friday announced that the company will trim hundred of jobs in its Alexa voice assistant unit.

The move will affect several hundred employees working on Alexa division. However, the spokesperson declined to be detailed on the matter and numbers.

As per sources, Daniel Rausch, Amazon’s vice president of Alexa and Fire TV on Friday sent a note to employees mentioning that the company is eliminating certain roles because it is ditching some initiatives.

“As we continue to invent, we’re shifting some of our efforts to better align with our business priorities, and what we know matters most to customers — which includes maximizing our resources and efforts focused on generative AI,” Rausch wrote.

It is to be noted here that Amazon from long time has been into pulling back the workforce from various divisions, which includes, gaming, music and human resources.

The spokesperson also claimed that the reason for the job cuts is because several companies are shifting resources to generative AI, which can create software code and lengthy text responses from short prompts.

Sources have claimed that job cuts will affect the employees working in the US, Canada and India. Noteworthy here is that these cuts are following the most recent layoffs in Amazon’s gaming and music divisions. This adds to 27,000 employees who were fired during the later parts of last year and in the beginning of this year.
