Following the footsteps of Netflix, now Disney+ Hotstar is set to limit the streaming of the services by limiting account sharing in India. Currently, a premium account of Disney+ Hotstar allows a user to access 10 devices from one login access.

However, the company is also planning to limit access to four logins per account later this year. According to the people familiar with the matter, it is something similar to what Netflix did earlier this year. Netflix started charging people who share their passwords other than the allowed access.

It is also anticipated that with this move the OTT platform is likely to attempt an increase in revenue, as the company is facing the competition from other platforms.

As a part of its strategy, the company is also conducting internal tests to gauge the effectiveness of the policy of password sharing. And notably, sources claim that only 5% of the premium subscribers accessed their account from more than four devices. The company is also concerned about delivering a high-quality streaming experience.

The sources claim that the move taken by the company has an objective that focuses on encouraging people to have their accounts rather than relying on shared accounts.

Currently, a user has to pay this much of an amount for accessing Disney+ Hotstar

  • Disney+ Hotstar Mobile with HD picture quality comes at a nominal price of ₹499/year.
  • For Disney+ Hotstar Super, the user is charged at ₹899/year, which comes with HD quality pictures.
  • Disney+ Hotstar Premium comes at 4K picture quality after paying ₹1,499/year.

Worth of Disney+ Hotstar

Disney+ Hotstar, India’s leading video OTT provider, reported a revenue of over ₹32 billion for the financial year 2022. Despite increasing revenue figures in recent years, the company recorded losses. That same year, this amounted to over ₹3 billion due to high expenses.

According to the agencies, Disney+ Hotstar, Netflix, Amazon, and Mukesh Ambani’s JioCinema are hugely popular in India, and it is anticipated that the OTT market could grow into a US$7 billion market for the sector by 2027.
