In a collaborative effort aimed at advancing 3D content creation and interoperability, industry giants Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, Nvidia, and Pixar have united to form the Alliance for Open Universal Scene Description (AOUSD).

This new alliance, operating as a non-profit organization under the Joint Development Foundation (JDF), which is affiliated with the Linux Foundation, seeks to harness the power of Pixar’s universal scene description technology through the OpenUSD 3D format.

At the core of AOUSD’s mission is the standardization, development, and promotion of 3D content creation using Pixar’s versatile scene description technology. The alliance will prioritize the establishment of compatibility among various 3D tools and data throughout the content creation workflow. This emphasis on interoperability aims to streamline processes and enhance efficiency in 3D content development.

With a commitment to fostering inclusivity and collaboration, AOUSD welcomes participation from individuals who share a passion for advancing 3D technology. This open platform allows contributors and developers, regardless of their affiliations, to join forces with prominent industry players and collectively contribute to the evolution of the Pixar OpenUSD repository.

Collaboration vital as 3D scenes become prominent in films, technologies

At the heart of this endeavour lies Pixar’s open-source software platform, USD (Universal Scene Description), designed specifically for crafting intricate 3D scenes. Originally tailored to meet the intricate demands of visual effects production in the realm of feature films, USD has been optimized to accommodate large-scale 3D production pipelines.

The significance of 3D technology is increasingly pronounced, particularly in the realm of high-budget cinematic productions. Apple, a key player in this initiative, recently unveiled its pioneering VR headset, the Vision Pro, equipped with robust 3D capabilities.

Mike Rockwell, Apple’s vice president of the Vision Products Group, highlighted Apple’s active involvement in USD’s development.

“Apple has been an active contributor to the development of USD, and it is an essential technology for the groundbreaking visionOS platform, as well as the new Reality Composer Pro developer tool. We look forward to fostering its growth into a broadly adopted standard,” Rockwell said.
