Netflix always comes up with new ideas to minimise the number of users sharing one account in the globe, now it’s time for India as the company has announced to end ‘password sharing’ in the country. In short, only members of a household will be able to access one account. This will be a major bombshell for the non-paying users. Earlier, there was a user who pays the bills for one account, and several others use it. But now, the streaming giant has tried to stop it.

This decision is part of a global crackdown announced in May on users sharing passwords with people beyond their immediate family as the company seeks to shore up revenue after a rough patch last year.

Netflix announces new restrictions

In an official statement, Netflix said, “Everyone living in that household can use Netflix wherever they are – at home, on the go, on holiday – and take advantage of new features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices.”

The company has already initiated the distribution of emails to customers who are sharing Netflix outside their households in India.

Now, the members can use Netflix at home, on the go, on holiday and take advantage of new features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices, it said.

“We recognise that our members have many entertainment choices. It is why we continue to invest heavily in a wide variety of new films and TV shows – so whatever your taste, mood or language and whoever you are watching with, there is always something satisfying to watch on Netflix,” the company added.

Netflix’s no password sharing rule

Recently, in May, Netflix imposed restrictions on password sharing in over 100 countries including prominent markets such as the US, Britain, France, Mexico, Germany, Australia, Singapore, and Brazil, resulting in the addition of nearly 6 million users globally.

According to an earnings release, Netflix finished the ended quarter with a total of 238 million subscribers and a profit of $1.5 billion.
