Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday strongly criticised the recent statement made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, where he said that there is a need for gradual acceptance of the Hindi language without encountering any kind of opposition, even if the pace of acceptance was slow.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader slammed the Home Minister’s ‘audacious push’ of Hindi over non-Hindi states, and said that Tamil Nadu will not be ‘enslaved by Hindi’.

While chairing the 38th meeting of the Committee of Parliament on Official Language in New Delhi on Friday, Amit Shah stressed the importance of respecting heritage through language. He said that the acceptance of an official language can only be achieved when local languages are respected, further clarifying that Hindi is not in competition with regional languages. Shah highlighted that the nation’s empowerment is contingent on the promotion of all Indian languages.

Responding to the Home Minister’s statements, Chief Minister Stalin wrote, “I strongly denounce Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s audacious push for Hindi acceptance. It’s a blatant attempt to subjugate non-Hindi speakers. Tamil Nadu rejects any form of Hindi hegemony and imposition. Our language and heritage define us – we won’t be enslaved by Hindi!

“Many states like Karnataka, West Bengal also have been vehemently resisting Hindi Imposition. Hon’ble Amit Shah, please take heed of the growing resistance! Igniting the embers of the ‘1965 Anti-Hindi Imposition Agitations’ would be an unwise move.”

In the 1965 Anti-Hindi agitations that engulfed Tamil Nadu, more than 70 people died in the ensuing protests and riots against the imposition of Hindi.

Tamil Nadu politicians join in condemning Amit Shah’s Hindi acceptance statements

The sentiments were echoed by Tamil Nadu minister and DMK youth wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin, who said, “Superficial praise for Tamil in Tamil Nadu, alongside imperialist pro-Hindi statements from North India, exposes BJP’s double standards. Tamil Nadu has a history of resisting Hindi imposition, and it will firmly reject all the autocratic moves of fascists.”

Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S Ramadoss also released a statement in opposition against Hindi imposition, asserting that such efforts would invariably fail in Tamil Nadu. “If what Amit Shah says is true that Hindi does not compete with other languages, then why is the Union government refusing to give due status to the languages listed in the Eighth Schedule? Is it because of the fear that Hindi will fall if the state languages become official languages?” Ramadoss said.

K Balakrishnan, the state secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), condemned Amit Shah’s remarks, accusing the BJP and RSS of pursuing a one-language-one-culture agenda. Balakrishnan criticised the instrumentalisation of Hindi as a political tool for short-term gains, saying, “We will not give space to attempts to destroy a pluralist democracy.”

However, Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai hit back at MK Stalin for his comments about Amit Shah, saying, “MK Stalin does not know English or Hindi so he could not understand what Union Home Minister Amit Shah said. Amit Shah said that education should be given in our mother tongue. DMK is still politicising this issue. Stalin and Udayanidhi Stalin has no other point to talk to the people. PM Modi talks about the pride of the Tamil language during his world tour. He is going to install a statue of Thiruvalluvar in France. It is certain that DMK will lose in the upcoming elections.”
