A heart-wrenching incident took place on Chennai-Bengaluru Highway (NH44), when a stationed tourist van, which was hit by a good lorry from behind, fell on seven women as they sat on a low-rise concrete divider in the wee hours of Monday, said the police. The seven women were killed during the collision incident.7 women killed in collision incident on NH 44According to the police, the tragic incident occurred in Tamil Nadus Sandaipalli village near Tirupattur districts Natrampalli town at around 2:40 am. In the collision incident, 10 injured people, including the drivers of the van and the lorry.The deceased have been identified as M. Meena (50), D Devayani (32), P Saittu (55), S Devika (50), V Savitri (42), K Kalavathi (50), and R Geetha (34). All of them belonged to Vellores Pernambut.STORY | Seven people killed in accident in Tamil NaduREAD: https://t.co/aYj5NvBBhNVIDEO: pic.twitter.com/yYRFKrxIKj— Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) September 11, 2023What happened this morningThe deceased, travelling along with eight relatives from the Pernambut town, were on a trip to visit pilgrims and tourist destinations in Karnatakas Mysore and had rented two tourist vans for the same.However, the trip became fatal when one of the front wheels of one of the vans got punctured on the highway, leading them to get off the bus and sit on a concrete median close to the van.At the same time, the lorrys driver 34-year-old P Arunachalam, who was carrying smart boards for classroom in the vehicle, was on the same highway travelling to Bengaluru. Arunachalam did not notice the parked van and hit it from behind, which then fell on the women and killed them on the spot.Official statementsSpeaking on the incident, Tirupathur Police told ANI, “It was early morning with less visibility, and the van was stationary at a sharp turn, which could have been the reason for the speedy mini-truck collision with the van. In the incident, seven women were dead on the spot, and 10 people got critical injuries.”After the incident, the Natrampalli Police and NHAI patrol vehicles immediately reached the spot to rescue the injured people. The injured were then rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital in Krishnagiri and Tirupattur and the Government Taluk Hospital in Vaniyambadi. The bodies had been send to a government hospital in Tirupattur.Meanwhile, the Natrampalli Police has filed a case. Tirupattur Collector D Bhaskara Pandian also visited the families of the deceased at the hospital.
