The Chennai Sessions Court on Wednesday extended the judicial custody for jailed Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji till August 8.

Principal Sessions Judge S Alli passed the order and extended the judicial remand for Senthil Balaji, who appeared before the judge through video conferencing from the Puzhal Prison.

SC issues notice to ED on Senthil Balaji plea

The Supreme Court, earlier on Friday, issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) after Senthil Balaji filed a plea challenging the Madras High Court’s order upholding the legality of his arrest by the central agency on a money laundering case.

The Madras High Court on July 14 upheld the arrest of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) minister by the ED as legal and allowed the judicial custody granted by a lower court to proceed. The High Court also clarified that the time spent by Senthil Balaji in the hospital for treatment would be excluded from the period of custody allowed to the ED.

Senthil Balai had spent time in the private Kauvery Hospital for bypass surgery.
