In response to claims of sexual harassment made by female wrestlers against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the Delhi Police on Friday filed two FIRs.

According to a senior police officer, two FIRs have been filed at the Connaught Place police station in response to allegations made by female wrestlers. According to him, the first FIR was filed in response to claims of outraging modesty made by a kid and was filed under the Indian Penal Code’s relevant sections as well as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).

The police official further informed that the second FIR has been registered for carrying out comprehensive investigations into the complaints by adult accusers. The FIRs are lodged under the relevant IPC sections about outraging of modesty.

Reportedly, First Information Reports (FIRs) were submitted hours after Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha’s Supreme Court panel heard from Delhi Police’s Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that a case would be lodged on Friday. In a sealed cover, senior attorney Kapil Sibal, who is representing the wrestlers, placed or recorded an affidavit expressing concern for the safety of a young girl who is allegedly the victim of sexual assault.

The bench said in its order, “Bearing in mind the content which has been placed on record, we direct the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, to make an assessment of the threat perception and provide adequate security to the minor girl involved.”

The quintessential step has been taken after the wrestlers displayed determination towards the protest at Jantar Mantar. The wrestlers have been stating that they won’t stop protesting until the WFI president is arrested.

The protest was aborted in January when the problem was initially brought up after the Sports Ministry formed a committee to look into it. Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister for Sports, at the time, declared that Singh, a BJP leader and a muscleman with a criminal past, would be the subject of an investigation by a five-member oversight committee led by boxer MC Mary Kom.

AAP urges PM to ensure that wrestlers get justice

AAP leaders urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that the wrestlers who were protesting at Jantar Mantar against the Wrestling Foundation of India’s head Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh received justice on Friday.

Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj, members of the Delhi Cabinet, and Reena Gupta, a spokesman for the AAP, greeted the demonstrators. Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, is also expected to visit Jantar Mantar on Saturday.

Priyanka Gandhi meets protesting wrestlers

On Saturday, Congresswoman Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met with wrestlers who were staging a protest at Jantar Mantar and offered her support. She arrived at Jantar Mantar in the morning and spoke with the wrestlers before departing for a series of election-related activities in Karnataka later in the day. The general secretary of the Congress was also spotted listening to renowned female wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik.

Won’t resign, I am not guilty: WFI chief

He was speaking to the media on Saturday morning. He added that this is a politically instigated case and is a conspiracy by Congress.
