In the ongoing match between New Zealand and Bangladesh in ICC Cricket World 2023 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the Blackcaps have posted 290 runs on the loss of 7 in 50 overs.

Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and invited New Zealand to bat first in the 16th match on Wednesday. Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips smashed respective half-centuries to help New Zealand post 288/6 in 50 overs.

As it happened

Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman gave a good start to his team dismissing Devon Conway early in the innings, who scored 20 runs off 18 balls.

New Zealand started the innings cautiously adding 41 runs and losing the wicket of experienced Devon Conway in the first powerplay. Will Young and Rachin Ravindra have stitched a 50-run partnership for the second wicket. Will Young is playing on 44 off 48 balls and Rachin Ravindra is on 15 of 24 balls.

Afghanistan’s fielding looked off-coloured and dropped two catches of Will Young, once on the score of 1 and then on 22. The batter grabbed the opportunity with both hands and scored half-centuries before getting dismissed by Azmatullah Omarzai. He scored 54 off 64 runs including four boundaries and three sixes.

Mini collapse in middle-order

Azmatullah Omarzai bagged two wickets in his first by dismissing Will Young and Rachin Ravindra to spark a mini-collapse in the New Zealand camp. Daryl Mitchell’s wicket added to the collapse in the very next over of Rashid Khan. He scored just 1 run.

Half-centuries by Latham and Glenn Philips

The Blackcaps skipper Tom Latham stitched a huge 144-run partnership with Glenn Philips and slammed respective half-centuries in the process to help New Zealand post a respective total. Tom Latham scored 68 runs off 74 balls including 3 boundaries and 2 sixes while Glenn Philips scored 71 runs off 80 balls including 4 boundaries and 4 maximum. Both the batters became the victims of Naveen-ul-Haq. The batting pair of Mark Chapman and Mitchell Santner added 33 runs to propel the team’s total to 288 runs in 50 overs.

Afghanistan is entering into the game riding high on confidence after a thumping win over England, while New Zealand will be eyeing to continue its winnings run in its World Cup campaign.

Naveen-ul-Haq and Azmatullah Omarzai scalped two wickets each Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman got one wicket each.
