After getting arrested by Punjab police on Sunday, radical preacher Amritpal Singh was brought to Dibrugarh Central Jail. One of the oldest and most guarded jails in the northeast, the highly secure jail already houses eight of his assistants.

According to the sources, Amritpal Singh and his supporters were relocated to the other side of the nation for this reason because gangsters connected to him or the separatist movement are more likely to be imprisoned in North Indian jails. Language reason could be another barrier for Amritpal that will prevent connecting him with other inmates and other staff in the jail.

Sources also said that Dibrugarh jail is considered to be one of the most secure prisons for him, as in its nearly 170-year history it has never seen any major prison break. According to insiders, the jail’s central position in Dibrugarh town gives authorities an edge because it makes it easier to thwart escape attempts than if it were in a rural or outlying place.

Reportedly, the security of the jail has also beefed up since March 19 when Amritpal’s aids were brought into the jail. The jail is having 3-tier security now. The Black Cat Commandos, CRPF and other security personnel are been deployed at the Dibrugarh jail.

Furthermore, more CCTV cameras have been installed at the jail, and malfunctioning cameras have also been deployed to keep a vigil eye on Amritpal and his supporters. The senior official confirmed that Amritpal Singh has been taken to Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA). He has been hiding in Rode, the native village of Khalistani separatist Jarnail. The Punjab Police official said that Amritpal Singh has been on run since March 18 and during the crackdown in Rode, he ran out of options and had to surrender.

‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh has been taken to Dibrugarh jail after being arrested from Moga, Punjab on Sunday. The reason why he is been shifted to Assam jail is as it is considered to be one of the most secured jails.

According to the official information, the monthly prison population figures given by the Assam government, the jail, which was built by the British in 1860, currently houses 680 inmates. Only the central jails in Guwahati and Tezpur are currently more crowded than Dibrugarh Jail, which is the third most inhabited central prison in the state. The ULFA insurgency in Assam was traditionally centred at Dibrugarh Central Jail, where some of the organization’s key commanders were detained.
