Just a day after Environment Ministry said that the national capital has registered the highest number of good to moderate air quality days this year since 2016, expect 2020, the Delhi chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal revealed that improving the city’s air quality index (AQI) has been the most difficult task for him.
The national capital has witnessed the least number of days with ‘poor to severe’ air quality in the first half-year period in 2023, compared to the corresponding period since 2016, barring 2020, the hit of the pandemic COVID-19.
Taking it to Twitter, the chief minister wrote, “This was perhaps the most difficult task – improving air quality. But a series of steps taken by Delhiites helped us achieve this seemingly impossible task. Still a long way to go. But Delhi people have always done what others thought impossible.”

During this period, the average AQI remained constant in the ‘moderate’ category- below 200. Also, as compared to the last seven years, the national capital has experienced the lowest average air quality index from January to June.
The Environment Ministry has also said that this improvement signifies a substantial reduction in air pollutants with lower levels of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and other harmful emissions.
