West Bengal panchayat polls: 3 party workers killed, alleges TMC

After panchayat poll begins in West Bengal on Saturday morning, Trinamool Congress alleged that 3 of its party workers have been killed in multiple incidents of violence in the state.

In a long Twitter post, TMC took on central forces for failing to ensure the safety and security of the people. TMC tweeted, “Shocking and tragic incidents send shockwaves through the voting community. Three of our party workers have been murdered in Rejinagar, Tufanganj, and Khargram and two have been left wounded from gunshots in Domkol.”

In addition, after the single-phase panchayat elections began in the state, the polling station at Baravita Primary School in Sitai, Cooch Behar, allegedly suffered vandalism, and ballot papers were burned.

West Bengal is going through elections to choose representatives for almost 928 seats spread across 22 zila parishads, 9,730 panchayat Samiti, and 63,239 gram panchayats, around 5.67 crore voters are expected to cast their ballots.

The sources state that West Bengal has 58,594 village panchayat election centres and 3,341 Gram Panchayats. The Gram Panchayat level has 63,239 seats, the Panchayat Samiti level has 9730 members, and the Zila Parishad level has 928 seats. Notably, the counting of the votes will be done on July 11.
