Rakesh Tikait, the national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Bhakiyu), accused the government of betraying farmers by not fulfilling the promises in the election manifesto. Speaking at a farmers’ rally, he alleged that the government was forcefully installing meters on tube wells to inflate electricity bills and was torturing farmers during land acquisition.

Naresh Tikait, also a leader of the Bhakiyu, called on officials of the Sugarcane Department and Electricity Department to take notice of the atrocities committed against farmers. He warned that they would not remain silent if the government did not stop its mistreatment of farmers.

Tikait calls for unity among farmers

Rakesh Tikait announced that farmers would gather in Delhi on March 20 to protest against various issues, including land acquisition and fair prices for agricultural produce. He emphasised the need for all farmers to unite and fight for their rights.

Rakesh Tikait warned sugar mills to pay their dues to farmers on time. He urged officials in the sugarcane department to transfer the crops of mills that did not pay their dues to other mills, ensuring that farmers received fair prices.

The rally was well-attended, with farmers from Meerut and other parts of the country gathering to express their concerns. Many farmer leaders spoke out against the government’s mistreatment of farmers and announced their intention to capture trains and travel to Delhi on March 20 for the Mahapanchayat rally.

Tikait answer to the threats received

He also addressed the recent threats against his family, warning those who threatened to bomb his family that the farmers’ movement would not be deterred. Rakesh Tikait stated that he and his family were committed to the cause of farmers and that anyone born into the Tikait family would be dedicated to the movement.

Conclusion

The Bhartiya Kisan Union is spearheading a nationwide movement to address the challenges farmers face in India, including land acquisition, crop prices, and government mistreatment. However, the recent threats against Rakesh Tikait and his family underscore the difficulties farmers face in their struggle for justice.
