Telescoping Method and 800-mm Pipes: A Shift in Strategy

Mahmood Ahmed, Additional Secretary Technical, Road and Transport, shared that the rescue team has shifted to the 'horizontal drilling' method. A notable change includes the use of 800-mm-diameter pipes instead of 900 mm, employing the telescoping method. This strategic adjustment aims to overcome obstacles faced during the initial attempts.

Critical Phase: Horizontal Drilling and Rubble Challenges

The ongoing horizontal drilling from the Silkyara end, covering a total length of 60 metres, faces challenges, with 22-45 metres filled with rubble. The Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited (THDC) is also contributing to horizontal drilling efforts from the Barkot side. The official emphasises the critical importance of the current phase, indicating that the next day and night are pivotal for the operation's success.

Addressing a press briefing, Mahmood Ahmed expressed hope, stating, "If everything goes right, we will come up with some 'good news' in the next 40 hours." The officials are banking on the modified drilling strategy to yield positive results in their bid to rescue the trapped labourers.

Communication Established: Lifeline Pipeline Connects with Trapped Workers

Describing recent developments, an official involved in the rescue operations reveals that a lifeline pipeline, laid recently, facilitated communication with the trapped workers. A walkie-talkie sent through the 6-inch pipeline established contact, providing assurance about the mental and physical well-being of the trapped individuals.

Innovative Solutions: 6-Inch Pipeline Delivers Essentials

In a significant breakthrough, the rescue team managed to lay a 6-inch pipe, allowing the delivery of solid food and mobile chargers to the collapsed section of the Silkyara Tunnel. Fruits such as oranges and bananas, along with essential medicines, were sent through the pipeline, ensuring the trapped workers received vital supplies.

As the clock ticks, the rescue team remains committed to their mission, hopeful that the strategic adjustments will lead to the successful evacuation of the labourers within the crucial next 40 hours.
