The use of mobile phones in jails in the state of Uttar Pradesh has been a growing concern in recent years, with recorded videos and other evidence of illicit mobile use coming to light. To address this issue, the Union Home Ministry has advised the state’s Prisons Department to install new technology mobile jammers similar to those used in Delhi’s Tihar Jail.

A pilot project in the works

The Prisons Department of Uttar Pradesh has already begun studying the new technology jammers and plans to launch a pilot project to test their effectiveness in select jails. The aim is to block all signals and prevent prisoners from accessing mobile networks.

Mobile phone use is a persistent problem

Mobile phone use in jails has been a persistent problem in Uttar Pradesh, with incidents of illicit mobile use and communication coming to light regularly. Last year, for instance, authorities seized 12 mobile phones during a raid on Azamgarh jail. And in the course of the investigation into the Umesh Pal murder case in Prayagraj, it emerged that a jailed mafia don was using a mobile phone to communicate with his family members and associates outside the jail.

Old jammers proving ineffective

The jammers currently in use in 24 jails across the state cannot block the newer 4G and 5G technology phones that prisoners are increasingly using. The Harmonious Call Blocking System that the new jammers will feature is designed to block all signals and prevent any calls from going through.

A much-needed solution

Installing new technology mobile jammers is seen as a much-needed solution to the problem of illicit mobile use in jails in Uttar Pradesh. With these jammers in place, authorities will be better able to ensure that prisoners cannot use mobile phones to carry out criminal activities or communicate with associates outside the jail.

Conclusion

Installing new technology mobile jammers in jails across Uttar Pradesh is a welcome move towards tackling the persistent problem of illicit mobile use among prisoners. The new jammers are expected to be more effective at blocking all signals and preventing prisoners from using mobile phones for criminal activities and could serve as a crucial model for other states to follow.
