A lawyer identified as Manoj alias Monu Chowdhary was fatally shot by unidentified assailants in his chamber on the court premises in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad on Wednesday, according to media reports.

The assailants targeted Chowdhary while he was having lunch, firing indiscriminately in the lawyer’s chamber, police officials said. The incident occurred around 2:15 PM on Wednesday, causing chaos in the vicinity.

The incident unfolded in the Sihanigate area of Ghaziabad, with CCTV cameras capturing the entire incident. Initial reports suggest that two attackers entered Chamber 95 at approximately 1:38 PM, concealing their faces with handkerchiefs. They opened fire on Chowdhary, leading to his demise.

Probe underway to nab Ghaziabad lawyer’s killers, Uttar Pradesh cops say

Officials from the Singhni Gate Police Station promptly responded to the situation, initiating an investigation and analysing the footage to identify the perpetrators. Forensic experts were also called to the scene to aid in the investigation process.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ghaziabad City, Nipun Aggarwal, provided insights into the incident, saying, “Today, at around 2:15 pm, police station Singhni Gate received information that Monu Chaudhary alias Manoj Chaudhary was sitting in his chamber, when two unknown assailants came and shot him dead.”

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and a comprehensive investigation is underway to nab the culprits, police confirmed.

This incident is reminiscent of the security concerns that arose earlier this year when Sanjeev Maheshwari, alias ‘Jeeva’, a close aide of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, was shot dead on the premises of the Lucknow Civil Court. The attacker, masquerading as a lawyer, was subsequently arrested.

“People are being murdered in police custody. There is clear involvement of top administrative officials in such incidents. There should be a detailed inquiry,” a legal professional told media personnel. “Today, a child of 4-5 years was injured in the attack. There is complete failure of law and order. What can we expect from the police if people are being murdered inside the court.”
