A 70-year-old man was beaten to death at the Sadhobhari village in Uttar Pradesh’s Kurebhar area for keeping his cow on a disputed piece of land, police officials said on Monday.

The deceased man – identified as Magghu Ram – was involved in an ongoing dispute with some people over using the contested land to keep his cow. The argument reportedly flared, resulting in the septuagenarian being attacked by the assailants with sticks.

The victim’s son Vijay intervened in the attack to try and save him, but he was also reportedly beaten by the assailants, police officials said.

Magghu Ram and Vijay were rushed to a nearby hospital by a police team, where the elderly villager succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead.

Vijay, however, has been reported to be in stable condition and is currently under medical supervision.
