A local court in Uttar Pradesh has sentenced a US national to two years imprisonment for trying to cross over to India on fake visa documents.
The accused who has been identified as Eric Daniel Beckwith (36) has also been imposed a fine of Rs 20,000.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Saurabh Srivastava on Friday pronounced the judgement sentencing him two years of jail. The court in its statement also noted that he has to stay in jail for extra 15 days, if he fails to pay the fine.
While speaking to media persons, the ASP informed that the US national was coming to India from Nepal when his documents were checked by the Immigration Department in the Sonauli area of the India-Nepal border and after investigation, where his visa documents were found to be fake. He was arrested on March 29.
Police then registered case against him under the relevant sections of the IPC and Section 14 of the Foreigners Act. Meanwhile, the concerned embassy and intelligence agencies have been informed about the case.
