The Uttar Pradesh government has started a special ten-day program, on instructions from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, to empower the women of the state and work towards women safety.

The 10-day campaign will be led by the Women and Child Safety Organization, based on instructions from the Chief Minister. It will also complement the Mission Shakti Abhiyan, which has been implemented by the UP Government to train women as ‘shakti didis’ – who will act as a bridge between the women and the police personnel.

The 10-day program started on July 21 and will go on till July 30. The government further announced that this event will be observed every month during the same timeline.

Work for women safety, inform about welfare schemes, fight crimes against children: UP govt

The program will have multiple facets, including informing the women about the various welfare schemes implemented by the government, resolving crimes against women and children, and taking action against the ‘anarchic elements’.

“Women and daughters of the state will be informed about various welfare schemes of the government on behalf of Shakti Didi of the department during the campaign. The problems being faced by women in availing of government’s schemes would also be addressed by coordinating with the concerned department,” Anupam Kulshrestha, Additional Director General of Police, Women and Child Safety Organisation, said.

ADGP Kulshrestha also said that the program will expedite the resolution of women’s daily problems, and ‘shakti didis’ will contact women at a grass root level and try to solve their problems.

During the campaign, female officers from women’s police beat will meet with the survivors of sexual violence and will provide them with their requirements and the necessary counselling. The officers will also visit schools and teach children about crimes against children, as well as the concept of ‘good touch and bad touch’.

The ‘shakti didi’ campaign will also take legal actions against ‘anarchic elements’ of the society under appropriate sections of the Goonda Act. The ‘shakti didis’ will also set up pink booths and outposts in cities to resolve the problems faced by women.
