The ed-tech platform Unacademy has been into headlines for remarks from some of their faculty members for sometimes now. The rising controversy does not seem coming to an end.

Social media users have now dredged up an old video of educator who termed tribal people ‘stupid’ during one of his lectures. This comes as edtech company Unacademy faces criticism for firing an educator who advised voters to choose ‘educated candidates.’

A social media user posted a 14-second video and claimed that the teacher is still associated with Unacademy despite making nasty and disparaging remarks. The tutor Siddharth Singh in the clip could be heard saying in Hindi, “Tribal log jo hote hain hamare, dimaag toh hota nahi unke paas koi, nahi unke paas koi, you know, kanooni koi kagaaz hote hai zameen zaydad ke (Tribal people are stupid. They also lack legal documents related to land and property).”

I will not back down: Karan Sangwan

Facing the backlash, Karan Sangwan justified his words saying that I have paid the price of speaking truth. His tweet says, “As you all know I have been fired from Unacademy for just doing my job. I didn’t breach any code of conduct as mentioned by Unacademy but still I did pay a price for speaking the truth to power. I will not back down, Jai Hind 🇮🇳”

Here’s is what the co-founder of the firm said:

However, the co-founder of the firm has asserted that they do not compromise with the code of conduct of their academy. Roman Saini on August 17, taking it to Twitter, wrote, “We are an education platform that is deeply committed to imparting quality education. To do this we have in place a strict Code of Conduct for all our educators with the intention of ensuring that our learners have access to unbiased knowledge.”

He further mentioned, “Our learners are at the centre of everything we do. The classroom is not a place to share personal opinions and views as they can wrongly influence them. In the current situation, we were forced to part ways with Karan Sangwan as he was in breach of the Code of Conduct.”
