In relation to the brutality against the 12-year-old in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain that sent schockwaves throught the country, a rickshaw driver was arrested by the police on Thursday. The young girl was seen going door to door while bleeding and a semi-naked clothing, seeking help from people in a CCTV footage.

The auto-rickshaw diver identified as Bharat Soni tried to flee police custody when he was taken to the crime spot for forensic investigation, and fell on the road, injuring himself. Three more were held by the police in relation to this incident.

Police chased down Ujjain rape accused

The Mahakal police station in-charge Ajay Verma said that the police chased down the accused and tried to flee the crime spot when he was taken to the place to recreate the crime scene.

Speaking to media, Ujjain SP Sachin Sharma said, “There is an accused in the rape case. There is another auto driver against whom a case will be registered for not informing the police about the incident. When we were taking (the accused) for recreation of the crime scene, the accused (Bharat Soni) tried to run away, during which he also got injured and our police officer also got injured. They are being provided medical assistance.”

He added, “An attempt was made to spread a narrative that no one helped her (the victim), but during our investigation, we found that people helped her financially, it would have been better if (more) help could have been provided. I thank the people of Indore for keeping faith in the police…”

After the CCTV video of the girl begging for help after the heinous crime went viral on Wednesday, Ujjain police formed a 28-member SIT headed to probe the case.

Whereabouts of victim

Investigations revealed later that the victim was from Satna and arrived in Ujjain after she boarded an auto at Jeevan Kheri. Later blood stains were also found the on the passenger seat, after which a forensic examination of the vehicle was underway.

The case has sent shockwaves through the country after reports suggested that no one came to her aid for more than two hours as she wandered on the Ujjain streets seeking help. The girl is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Indore where she is being operated by a team of specialist doctors at the Government Maharaja Tukojirao Holkar Women’s Hospital, media reports suggest.
