Tragedy strikes Kerala: Young doctor dies by suicide, dowry suspected

A shocking incident has been surfaced from Kerala where a 26-year-old postgraduate doctor, Dr Shahana, died by suicide on December 5. The incident has sent shockwaves through the medical community and sparked outrage across the state, with accusations of dowry demands surfacing as a potential trigger.

According to police officials, Dr Shahana was found unconscious at her apartment near the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, where she was pursuing her postgraduate studies in surgery. She was rushed to the hospital but declared dead upon arrival.

Following the tragedy, reports emerged alleging that Dr Shahana's decision to take her own life was linked to dowry demands made by her fiancé’s family. Her relatives claimed that her the fiancé is also a doctor, backed out of the marriage due to these demands, leaving Dr Shahana deeply distressed.

In response to these allegations, Kerala Health Minister Veena George has ordered a probe into the incident. The Women and Child Development Department has been directed to investigate the case thoroughly and submit a report.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating the matter further. In addition to this, statements from Dr Shahana's family and friends are being recorded, and the fiancé is also expected to be questioned.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for stricter action against dowry harassment. The Kerala State Women's Commission has demanded a swift and thorough investigation into the case and urged the government to take necessary steps to curb the social evil of dowry.
