Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha said that the parties who will support the Delhi Services Bill tabled by the Centre will be remembered as ‘anti-nationals’, and that the AAP was fighting to save the country’s Constitution by opposing the legislation.

Chadha said this while speaking to news agency ANI on Tuesday, in response to the news that Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) pledged their support in favour of the Centre’s bill to replace the controversial Delhi Ordinance.

The YSRCP had last week pledged their support to the Centre’s bill, while the BJD on Tuesday said that it will vote in favour of the bill, as well as back the government against the opposition alliance INDIA’s no-confidence motion.

“As far as YSR Congress [Party] and BJD are concerned, they are big parties and are ruling the state governments in two of the biggest and most important states in the country – Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. But even then, they have decided to support the anti-democratic and unconstitutional bill to take away all the powers from the state government. On that, I have to say that they must have had some compulsions for taking that decision. What those compulsions are, I leave it to the people of the country to decide.,” Chadha told ANI.

“I want to say, however, that this dangerous law that will take away all the powers of the state government, should not be seen from the perspective of just Delhi. If this law succeeds in Delhi, if the BJP succeeds in implementing this law in Delhi, then this will be implemented in many other non-BJP states across the country, and the powers of the non-BJP state governments will be snatched away,” Chadha said.

Quoting poet Rahat Indori, Chadha said, “If the power of our [Delhi] state government is snatched away, then that day is not far away that the power of your [non-BJP] state governments will be snatched away by the dictatorial and Hitler-like government sitting at the Centre. I think they [YSRCP & BJD] understand their compulsions better, so they should be the one to speak more on this.”

BJP taking away Delhi govt’s power because of humiliation, frustration: Raghav Chadha

On being questioned about the motive for the Central government in bringing the Delhi Services Bill, the AAP MP accused them of trying to make up for their repeated election losses in Delhi by taking away the state government’s power.

“The life of Aam Aadmi Party is in the hearts of the Delhi people, and there is a lot of love for Aam Aadmi Party among the people of Delhi. The people of Delhi love Arvind Kejriwal so much that they have voted for him repeatedly. BJP has tried many times to snatch our powers away, sometimes through ordinance, through bill, notifications, sometimes leaving the Lieutenant Governor on us. They have set up many investigations against us. But the people of Delhi have continued to support and bless their ‘son’ Arvind Kejriwal,” Chadha said.

He continued, “I think that the BJP – which has been unable to win any elections in Delhi in the past 25 years – is taking revenge for their frustration and humiliation by turning the 2 crore people of Delhi into slaves by taking away their democratic rights through this law. This is an ‘anti-national- bill’. The people who are supporting this ‘anti-national’ bill will be remembered by history as ‘anti-nationals’. And those who are supporting us in our fight to defeat this bill, will be remembered by history as ‘patriots’.”

The Delhi Services Bill will be tabled in both Houses of the Parliament – Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha – today.
