A 28-year-old postgraduate medical student, Dr Shahana in Thiruvananthapuram died by suicide, leaving behind a note that referred to a broken engagement and financial pressures. Following this tragic incident, the police arrested Dr. EA Ruwais, a principal doctor at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and a prominent figure in the Kerala Medical Postgraduates Association (KMPGA), on charges of abetment to suicide and violating the Dowry Prohibition Act.Why Dr Shahana commmited suicideThe deceased womans family alleges that Dr. Ruwais called off their engagement after they failed to meet his exorbitant dowry demands. These demands reportedly included 150 sovereigns of gold (worth over Rs 60 lakhs), immovable property, and a car.
