Telangana Assembly Elections 2023: In a decisive move, the Election Commission of India has suspended Telangana's Director General of Police, Anjani Kumar, for a clear violation of the Model Code of Conduct.
The action comes in response to Kumar's meeting with Telangana Congress president Revanth Reddy at his residence earlier today.
The suspension order was issued after the Telangana DGP, along with Sanjay Jain, State Police Nodal Officer, and Mahesh Bhagwat, Nodal Officer (Expenditure), visited Revanth Reddy. Official sources state that the DGP's meeting with a contesting candidate while the counting process was still underway, along with other senior police officers, indicates a mala fide intention of seeking favour.
As the head of the State Police force, the Director General of Police is expected to demonstrate impartial conduct and lead the police services by example. Any misconduct on the part of the DGP sets a wrong precedent and sends incorrect signals to field formations still involved in the election process.
The Election Commission emphasized that if senior police officers abandon their duties during the counting process to meet candidates, it could have disastrous consequences. Such actions may lead to subordinates following similar patterns, risking the integrity of the election process.
In addition to Anjani Kumar's suspension, the Election Commission has sought explanations from the other two officials present during the meeting: State Police Nodal Officer Sanjay Kumar Jain and Nodal Officer (Expenditure) Mahesh M. Bhagwat. The EC has also stated that the next senior most eligible Police Officer of the State will assume the role of Director General of Police for Telangana immediately.
This stringent action underscores the Election Commission's commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring that officials adhere to the Model Code of Conduct without bias or favouritism.
