Amara Raja Batteries Limited, Indias one of leading industrial and automotive battery majors has started the work on a lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant. The announcement for the upcoming Giga plant was announced with the planned investment of Rs 9,500 crore over the next 10 years.At Divitipally in the Mahabubnagar district, Telanganas first giga factory was officially opened by Minister for Industries and Commerce K T Rama Rao, Dr Ramachandra N Galla, founder of the Amara Raja Group, and Jayadev Galla, Chairman & Managing Director of Amara Raja Batteries Limited (ARBL). The minister hailed it as a significant advancement in Telanganas efforts to electrify its goals of being a centre for green transportation. This is among the greatest investment in this industry, he added.The Telangana government and Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies Pvt. Ltd. (ARACT), a fully owned subsidiary of ARBL, agreed in December 2022. ARACT has been working on Li-ion cell chemistries specifically suited for the conditions of the Indian subcontinent and already provides lithium battery packs and chargers to some 2 and 3-Wheeler OEMs.The ceremony marked the beginning of the Amara Raja Corridor which aims for Lithium Cell and Battery Packs with an ultimate capacity of up to 16 Gigawatt hours (GWh) and up to 5 GWh respectively. The first phase of the plan is expected to get over within 2-3 years. The facility of the company in a statement said that this project will create the direct employment of around 4,500 people and a similar number of indirect jobs, which will make a significant contribution to the socio-economic growth of the region.According to the update from the officials, the initial facility would include first-of-its-kind advanced laboratories and an innovation centre. The facility will also be equipped with research, prototyping, and product life cycle analysis. They further added that this project will not only cater to the development of the Amara Raja but will also provide a range of facilities to the other players in the field of energy and mobility.The minister further informed the people who were doubting that the plant will pollute the area, saying that the plant is coming with zero liquid discharge. He also offered to make transport available to the people who were doubting the location of the plant.
