Red alert in Tamil Nadu: In response to incessant rainfall, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a 'Red' alert for four districts in Tamil Nadu—Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Tiruvaneli, and Kanyakumari. S Balachandran, Director of Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, confirmed the alert for the next 24 hours in these regions.

Holiday Declared as Precautionary Measure

Due to the heavy rainfall, the Tamil Nadu government took precautionary measures by declaring a holiday for all schools, colleges, private institutions, banks, and financial institutions in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi districts on Monday.

Impacts of Continuous Rainfall

The Thoothukudi district experienced continuous rainfall, resulting in 40 lakes in the Kovilpatti area reaching full capacity. IMD forecasts indicated heavy rain in specific areas of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi.

Overflowing Rivers and Lakes

Continuous rain since Sunday morning led to rivers and lakes around Kovilpatti reaching full capacity, causing overflow. In response, measures such as sandbags and JCB machines were employed to control water flow, particularly in the Koosalipatti and Inam Maniyachi areas.

CM Stalin's Directives

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin issued instructions for party cadres from rain-affected districts to actively participate in ongoing relief work. This move aims to mitigate the impact of the heavy rainfall and provide assistance to affected communities.
