Heavy rainfall in Chennai causes disruptions, IMD issues warning

Flooding and water-logging took place in several districts of Tamil Nadu this past Sunday. As per The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur over Tamil Nadu and Kerala during the next 2-3 days.

Areas that are predicted to face heavy rainfall include, Toothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Madurai, Mayiladuthurai, Tenkasi, and Virudhunagar districts. The residents of Tamil Nadu have already had to face inconveniences due to the downpour of rainfall.

Residences near River Tamiraparani plans to evacuate

Dam water and Rainfall water are causing those living near the banks of river Tamiraparani from the dam areas of Truvaikundam Marudar, and Kaliavur to Punnakayal to start moving out. The local government, police, and revenue department will work together to safely move people to relief camps. Further, the Women's Programme, Public Works Department, Fire Department, and all departments are making efforts to take proper action.

Schools and Colleges Shutdown

The rainfall is disrupting the studies of children who attend schools and colleges affected by the area. Perphaps work online may resume, but there is no official announcement yet.

Water-Logging Causes Trains to be Diverted

As stated by Southern Railway:

Train no 06011 Tambaram–Nagercoil Spl that left Tambaram at 08.05 hrs on 18.12.2023 is diverted. Now it will run via Chennai Egmore,Perambur, Jolarpettai ,Erode,Palakkad,Shoranur, Ernakulam North,Kottayam,Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram & Nagercoil. This is caused by water logging in the Tirunelveli Pit line.

The officials working together and preplanning how to deal with the flooding is a positive sign.
