Update (May 16, 3:15 pm): According to the latest updates, the death toll in the spurious liquor case in Tamil Nadu has increased to 13. With this, the number of people who died in two separate incidents in the states has increased to 18.
The police officials on Monday said that several people who died on Saturday evening consumed the illicit liquor in the fishing hamlet of Marakkana in Ekkiyarkuppam district. The second incident was reported on Sunday from Maduranthagam in Chengalpattu where five people died allegedly due to consumption of illicit liquor.
However, police have not found any link between the incidents that were reported from the north zone of Tamil Nadu.
The chief minister MK Stalin has also announced ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased and a compensation of Rs 50,000 to those who are hospitalised.
As per sources, the death toll in the spurious liquor incident has gone up to eight in Villupuram. With this, the number of people who died in two different incidents has increased to 12, in the state.
Reportedly, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu MK Stalin reached Villupuram district government hospital. During his visit, the chief minister will meet the family members of the deceased and meets the remaining victims who are undergoing medical treatment at the hospital. State ministers Ponmudi and AV Velu will also accompany the chief minister.
Reportedly, at least 10 people died after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts. Out of this, four deaths were reported on Friday. According to the Inspector General of Police (North N Kannan on Sunday informed that the victims possibly consumed liquor, which reportedly contained a mixture of ethanol-methanol and other chemical substances. However, police officials have informed us that there is no connection between both incidents.
The incident happened in Ekkiyarkuppam fishing hamlet of Marakkanam where a group of people consumed illicit liquor on Saturday evening.
The number of people who died after the consumption of the spurious liquor has increased to 12, out of which 10 people died in the Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts.
Notably, the Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin has announced Rs 10 lakh each to the family of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each who are hospitalised. Apart from this, Marakkanam Inspector Arul Vadivel Azhagan, sub-Inspector Deepan, PEW inspector Maria Sobi Manjula and sub-inspector Sivagurunathan are temporarily suspended in connection with the case.
The chief minister has also directed the authorities to give special treatment to those who are hospitalised. Notably, the government is also taking strict action to curb illicit liquor and narcotics.
According to the police officials, a man has been arrested in connection with the case and spurious liquor has also been seized from his possession, which has been sent to the lab to check the presence of methanol in it. After the incident, an alert has also been issued in the area.
