Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is all set to inaugurate the state-of-the-art new building of the Assam Legislative Assembly in Guwahati on Sunday. The momentous occasion will witness the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter on Saturday to express his excitement, writing, “Tomorrow is a historic day for Assam. Hon’ble Lok Sabha Speaker will dedicate our first permanent Legislative Assembly Complex to the people.”

The inauguration event will be attended by all existing and former Parliamentarians, members of the Assam Legislative Assembly, and other dignitaries.

Pijush Hazarika, a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from the BJP, shared his anticipation on Twitter, writing, “The Hon’ble Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Shri Om Birla Ji, will inaugurate the newly constructed Assam Legislative Assembly building tomorrow, i.e., on July 30. On the eve of the auspicious ceremony, I visited the newly constructed Assembly Hall today and assessed the progress of the preparations for tomorrow’s event.”

New building to have e-Vidhan; first modern assembly in Assam: Deputy Speaker

Earlier, Numal Momin, Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, revealed to news agency ANI that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla would grace the occasion by inaugurating the new building on July 30.

“The Lok Sabha Speaker, Chief Minister of Assam along with cabinet colleagues, and members of Assam Legislative Assembly will be present on the occasion. We are fully prepared for the programme,” Deputy Speaker Momin Said.

The new building boasts advanced features, including plans for the e-Vidhan system which would allow for paperless legislation, making it the first modern assembly in Assam.

“The new [assembly] building has new features. We are planning for e-Vidhan that is also very shortly will have in the new building. It will be a very modern assembly in Assam for the first time. Next assembly session will be held in the new building,” Momin said.

The construction of the building began during the Congress regime, with some redesigning taking place subsequently. However, it gained momentum under the current government, leading to its completion and subsequent inauguration today.

“After our government has come, we have intensified the works and on July 30 the new building will be inaugurated,” Momin added.
